The Ultimate Disney World Planning Guide

Real planning.

Real budgeting.

Real family survival tips.

Hi! We’re the Santos Family!

Disney World has become one of our favorite places to make memories together as a family. After 5 trips, we’ve learned it’s so much more than rides. It’s the early rope drop mornings, pool breaks after long park days, late nights on Main Street, and the little moments we still talk about long after the trip is over.

We’ve also learned Disney can feel overwhelming FAST without a plan.

This guide walks you through everything we actually do including budgeting, choosing the right hotel, planning park days, deciding what extras are worth it, and making Disney feel magical without trying to do absolutely everything.

Every tip comes from real trips, real planning, real mistakes, and real family memories.

Start Planning Early and Pay for Disney Over Time

The best Disney trips are usually the ones that start with a solid plan. Before anything else, lock in your travel dates. Your dates affect almost everything including your budget, crowd levels, weather, flight prices, school schedules, sports schedules, and work PTO. Once you find dates that realistically work for your family, the whole trip immediately starts to feel less overwhelming and way more exciting.

For our family, planning 12–18 months ahead gives us enough time to slowly save and pay for the trip over time instead of getting hit with one giant vacation payment all at once. Disney gets expensive FAST between flights, hotels, park tickets, food, Lightning Lanes, airport expenses, souvenirs, and all the random little extras that somehow always end up in your cart. Treating Disney like a monthly bill instead of one huge expense completely changed the way we travel. By the time we leave for our trip, most of it is already paid off which means less stress, less guilt, and way more freedom to actually enjoy the vacation.

This is also when the fun starts. The late-night Disney research phase is REAL. One minute you are looking up hotels and the next you are deep into Disney videos discovering things you never even knew existed. We found guided fishing trips, resort campfires, hidden playgrounds, special dining experiences, behind-the-scenes tours, character experiences, and so many little Disney details most families completely miss.

One of the biggest real mom tips I can give is this: do NOT try to do everything. Disney World is huge, and trying to cram every ride, restaurant, show, and activity into one trip is the fastest way to burn everyone out. Some of our favorite Disney memories came from slowing down, taking breaks, hanging out at the resort pool, grabbing snacks, and leaving room for spontaneous moments instead of running nonstop all day. Once your dates are set and you have a rough plan, the trip starts feeling magical long before you even leave home.

Season Reality Check

🌸 Spring

Spring is one of the best times to visit Disney World. The weather is warm without being miserable, flowers are blooming, and EPCOT’s Festivals makes the parks feel extra pretty.

The biggest thing to watch for is Spring Break crowds. Prices and wait times can jump fast depending on your dates.

Best for:
♡ Comfortable weather
♡ EPCOT festivals
♡ Pool days without extreme heat

Spring can feel amazing or incredibly crowded during peak Spring Break weeks.

☀️ Summer

Summer at Disney World is HOT. You need water, portable fans, cooling towels, and probably a midday hotel break if you want to survive the afternoons.

The good news? The parks stay open later, nighttime rides are fun, and summer has a super energetic Disney vibe.

Best for:
♡ Longer park hours
♡ Pool and water park
♡ Summer break travel

Bring patience, deodorant, and realistic expectations. Florida heat is no joke.

🍂 Fall

Fall has some of the best Disney vibes. Halloween decor, EPCOT festivals, seasonal snacks, and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party make the parks feel extra magical.

Crowds can still get busy though, especially during long weekends, fall breaks, and special event nights.

Best for:
♡ Halloween season
♡ Special Events
♡ Better weather
♡ Seasonal treats

The vibes are elite, but fall trips take a little more planning than people expect.

❄️ Winter

Winter at Disney World is gorgeous with Christmas decorations, holiday music, and seasonal treats. But everyone else also knows winter Disney is magical, so crowds and prices can get intense.

The weather is usually better than summer, but Florida winter can still surprise you. Sweatshirt in the morning and sweating by afternoon.

Best for:
♡ Christmas magic
♡ Holiday events
♡ Cooler weather

Winter Disney is great, but you definitely won’t be the only person with that idea.

Disney Extras: What’s Worth It (and What’s Not)

Disney World has SO many add-ons, upgrades, and extra experiences that it’s honestly easy to blow your budget fast if you’re not careful. Some extras were totally worth it for our family and made our trip smoother, easier, or more memorable. Others? We skipped them completely and didn’t feel like we missed out at all.

PhotoPass

Get unlimited professional photos throughout the parks plus ride photos automatically added to your account so you can actually be IN the memories instead of always taking the pictures.

This was honestly one of our favorite purchases of the entire trip and one of the Disney extras we would absolutely pay for again. Not only do you get unlimited professional photos throughout all four parks, but it also includes your ride photos too which saves you from having to decide if each individual photo is “worth it” later.

As a mom, I’m usually the one taking all the pictures which means I’m missing from half of our vacation memories. PhotoPass let me actually be IN the photos with my family instead of constantly standing behind the camera. Some of our favorite Disney pictures ever came from random PhotoPass stops we almost walked past.

Disney photographers are everywhere throughout the parks, resorts, and even some character dining locations. You can open the Disney World app, switch to the map, and search for all the PhotoPass locations nearby. If you click each icon, it will even show what kind of photo opportunity is offered there. Some locations also include Magic Shots where Disney adds special characters or effects into your pictures later which kids LOVE.

Another reason this felt worth it for us was convenience. We didn’t have to hand strangers our phones, worry about getting everyone in the picture, or miss ride reactions because we forgot to buy the photo afterward. Everything automatically showed up in the app and was easy to download later.

⭐ Mom Tip: Take the picture when you see the photographer. We always say “we’ll come back later” and later usually never happens.

⭐ Pro Tip: Buy PhotoPass before your trip if possible because Disney usually offers a discount when you purchase it in advance. We also recommend taking a screenshot of your PhotoPass QR code so you can quickly pull it up for photographers instead of waiting for the Disney app to load every time.

Disney Dining Plan

Great for budgeting and prepaying meals ahead of time, but it’s only really worth it if you plan your dining strategically and maximize the value.

The Disney Dining Plan can be really nice for budgeting because so much of your food is prepaid before the trip even starts. It made the vacation feel less financially stressful once we were actually there because we weren’t constantly pulling out our wallets for every meal. That said, if you’re doing the Disney Dining Plan… planning is EVERYTHING.

If you strategize correctly, you can eat REALLY well and get amazing value out of your credits. We spent a lot of time researching menus, comparing prices, and figuring out which meals gave us the best value. Yes, I made spreadsheets. Yes, I compared lunch vs. dinner pricing. Yes, I have absolutely zero regrets.

Each person ages 3 and older gets:
• 1 Quick-Service meal per night of stay
• 1 Table-Service meal per night of stay
• 1 Snack or drink credit per night of stay
• 1 refillable resort mug

One of the best parts is that your credits roll over during your trip, so you don’t have to use them daily. Anything unused just expires at checkout. Drinks are included with meals too, including alcoholic drinks for adults at table-service restaurants, which can really help maximize value.

One of our biggest strategies was skipping breakfast credits completely. Most mornings we ate quick breakfast items from our grocery delivery like pastries, muffins, fruit, or breakfast bars before heading to the parks. It was faster, cheaper, and honestly worked way better for early rope drop mornings. Plus, it gave us extra time to knock out rides before the parks got crowded later in the day.

Dining reservations are another thing you NEED to plan early. Reservations open 60 days before your trip at 6:00 AM ET and the popular restaurants go FAST. I always set an alarm, wake up early, and book everything right when reservations open. If you’re staying at a Disney resort, you can book your entire trip at once which gives you a huge advantage. We always prioritize the hardest reservations first and especially restaurants later in our trip since availability is usually better.

Another big thing we learned: character dining is not always the best value. A lot of character meals cost TWO table-service credits per person, which adds up fast. For our family, we preferred using one credit at higher-quality restaurants instead. We also looked for restaurants where lunch used fewer credits than dinner. For example, some restaurants cost two credits at dinner but only one at lunch which can make a huge difference.

Our snack credit strategy also saved us a lot. Many people panic at the end of the trip and start using snack credits on random things just so they don’t “waste” them. We saved a lot of ours for EPCOT festival booths and specialty snacks instead. We also used snack credits for Venti Starbucks drinks in the parks which honestly helped us survive some early mornings. Since we ordered groceries for the room, we didn’t waste credits on basic snacks and could use them on the fun Disney treats instead.

Later in this guide, I’ll break down exactly what we ate, which restaurants were worth it, and the dining strategies that saved us the most money.

Lightning Lane

Lightning Lane can save your family HOURS of waiting in line, especially at parks like Hollywood Studios, but you definitely do NOT need it every day to have an amazing Disney trip.

Lightning Lane can save your family HOURS of waiting in line, especially at parks like Hollywood Studios, but it can also get expensive fast if you buy it for every park and every day. If your kids struggle with long lines, you’re traveling during peak season, or you only have a few park days, it can absolutely be worth budgeting for. But if you’re visiting during a slower season and use Early Entry and rope drop strategically, you may not need it nearly as much.

Disney now has THREE different Lightning Lane options, which honestly makes the whole thing way more confusing than it needs to be.

✨ Lightning Lane Multi Pass
This is the option most families will use. It allows you to reserve return times for multiple rides throughout the day instead of waiting in standby lines. You can initially choose up to 3 experiences, and after you use one, you can continue booking additional rides throughout the day if availability remains.

The biggest thing to know is that popular rides WILL sell out for the day, so prioritize your must-do attractions first. Prices usually range around $25–$40 per person depending on the park and crowd levels.

Magic Kingdom highlights:
Top picks include Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Other good choices include Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, It’s a Small World, and other popular family rides.

EPCOT highlights:
Best choices usually include Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Test Track. Other options include Soarin’, Spaceship Earth, Mission: SPACE, and more.

Hollywood Studios highlights:
This park gives the BEST value for Lightning Lane because the waits get long FAST. Top rides include Slinky Dog Dash, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Millennium Falcon, and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster. Other options include Tower of Terror, Toy Story Mania, Star Tours, and shows.

Animal Kingdom highlights:
Includes Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Kali River Rapids, Na’vi River Journey, and shows.

✨ Lightning Lane Single Pass
This option is separate from Multi Pass and is used for Disney’s MOST popular rides that are not included in the regular system. You pay individually per ride, per person.

Examples include:
• TRON Lightcycle / Run (Magic Kingdom)
• Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)
• Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT)
• Rise of the Resistance (Hollywood Studios)
• Avatar Flight of Passage (Animal Kingdom)

✨ Lightning Lane Premier Pass
This is the premium option that gives one-time Lightning Lane access to ALL available attractions in a park for one day, including the Single Pass rides. It sounds amazing honestly… but it is VERY expensive and completely out of our family’s budget. Prices usually range around $119 to $449+ PER person, PER day depending on the season and crowds.

⭐ Real Mom Tip: You do NOT need Lightning Lane every single day to have an amazing Disney trip. We mixed Lightning Lane days with slower parks, Early Entry mornings, resort breaks, and pool days which saved us a LOT of money without feeling like we missed out.

Bus Transportation

Disney transportation can save money, but for our family Uber is usually faster, easier with kids, and less stressful on long travel days.

Disney buses can be a good option if you are going straight to Disney after landing and want to save money on transportation. They are not included automatically with your resort stay anymore, but you can pay for transportation once you arrive at the airport.

For our family though, we usually end up using Uber instead especially after long travel days, late flights, or exhausting park days. Most of the time we fly into Orlando later in the evening, so instead of paying for a full Disney resort night we won’t really use, we stay at a cheaper hotel near the airport the first night. Then we head to Disney the next morning and start our actual Disney resort stay refreshed and ready for a full park day. Honestly, this has saved us a LOT of money and helped us get way more value out of our Disney resort stay.

Waiting in long bus lines with tired kids, strollers, luggage, and exhausted parents is just not always worth it for us.

Why we usually choose Uber:
✅ Faster with less waiting
✅ Easier with kids, strollers, and luggage
✅ More flexible for grocery stops or late-night food runs
✅ Saves money by avoiding an extra Disney resort night
✅ Less stressful after long travel days and park days
✅ Easier during busy times when buses get crowded

⭐ Real Mom Tip: Flying in late at night and staying near the airport before starting your Disney resort stay can save a surprising amount of money and helps you avoid wasting an expensive Disney hotel night just sleeping.

Park Hopper

Park Hopper sounds amazing in theory, but for our family it usually ends up feeling exhausting, time-consuming, and not worth the extra cost especially with kids.

Each Disney park is HUGE and can easily fill an entire day on its own. Between transportation time, walking back and forth, security checks, and crowds, park hopping can eat up hours you could have spent actually enjoying the park you already paid to be in.

For us, constantly rushing to “fit another park in” started making the trip feel stressful instead of fun. The reality is that moving between parks takes longer than most people expect, especially when you add tired kids, afternoon meltdowns, weather, and busy transportation times into the mix.

If you are staying 4+ park days, we personally think one park per day is WAY less stressful and gives your family more time to slow down and actually enjoy the experience. Some of our best Disney memories came from taking breaks, staying later in one park, riding favorites again, or heading back to the resort pool instead of rushing somewhere else.

That said, Park Hopper can still make sense for some trips especially if:
✅ You only have a few park days
✅ You want to revisit favorite rides at night
✅ You are doing EPCOT dining or festivals
✅ You want maximum flexibility
✅ You have older kids or adults-only trips

⭐ Real Mom Tip: Don’t underestimate how exhausting Disney transportation can feel after 20,000+ steps in Florida heat. Sometimes staying put in one park is the best decision for everyone.

Disney Water Parks

Disney’s water parks look fun, but for our family they just didn’t feel worth adding another ticket and another full day to an already packed Disney trip.

Between park days, travel days, resort time, and rest days, we already felt like we had MORE than enough to do. Honestly, the resort pools were such a huge hit with our son that we never felt like we were missing out by skipping the water parks.

The Disney water parks are definitely fun, but they also felt pretty similar to a lot of regular water parks we have been to before. If your family LOVES water parks or you are planning a longer trip with extra downtime, it could absolutely be worth it for you. But for us, we would rather spend the extra money on another park day, Lightning Lane, special dining, or resort upgrades instead.

One thing we learned quickly is that Disney trips can already feel very full and exhausting, especially with younger kids. Adding too much can sometimes make the vacation feel more stressful instead of more magical.

⭐ Real Mom Tip: Don’t underestimate how much kids love Disney resort pools. Some of our son’s favorite memories came from simple pool afternoons and splash pads at the resort, especially at Art of Animation.

Travel Day Strategy

Staying near the airport the first night has honestly been one of our favorite Disney planning strategies because it saves money, reduces stress, and helps us start Disney actually rested instead of exhausted from travel day.

We usually fly into Orlando later in the evening, so going straight to Disney just doesn’t make sense for our family. Disney resorts are expensive, and if you arrive late, you’re basically paying premium prices just to sleep for a few hours.

Instead, we stay near the airport the first night, relax after the flight, and officially start our Disney resort stay the next morning. This helps us get WAY more value out of our Disney hotel because we actually get to enjoy the resort instead of just crashing there after midnight.

For this trip, we stayed at Staybridge Suites Orlando Airport South and it worked perfectly for travel day.

Close to the airport

Affordable

Huge Rooms

Grocery Delivery = Smart Move

This hotel is the perfect place to have groceries delivered before you start your Disney adventure. It’s usually cheaper, easier, and avoids extra fees at Disney resorts!

What We Usually Order:

✔️ Water bottles

✔️ Snacks for parks

✔️ Breakfast items (bars, pastries, cereal)

✔️ Alcohol for hotel

✔️ Quick grab-and-go items

Real Mom Tip: We always pack a large foldable bag to easily move groceries to Disney the next day. Having these on hand saves us SO much money throughout the trip!

Choosing the Right Disney Hotel

Why we loved Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

The entire resort is designed around beloved Disney and Pixar movies including Finding Nemo, Cars, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. The courtyards are so detailed that just walking around the resort feels like an attraction on its own.

We let our son choose which section we stayed in, and of course he picked Cars. Waking up next to Lightning McQueen was basically a dream come true for a 6-year-old. Letting kids help choose little parts of the trip makes everything more exciting for them… and honestly cuts down on a lot of complaints later.

🚠 Huge Perk: The Skyliner

One of the best parts about staying at Art of Animation is having direct access to the Disney Skyliner. It makes getting to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios SO much easier, especially with kids and strollers. The Skyliner was honestly one of our favorite parts of staying here because it felt fast, relaxing, and way less stressful than buses.

And the best part?

You do NOT have to fold your stroller

Build Rest Days Into Your Disney Trip

Disney is magical, but it’s also exhausting! Rest days are the secret to keeping the whole family happy.

Our Rest Days Strategies

Arrival Day: Slow Start & Pool

One of the BEST decisions we make every Disney trip is treating arrival day like a rest day instead of trying to rush straight into the parks. After staying near the airport the night before, we head to Disney around 10 AM, which gives us time to sleep in, eat breakfast, and travel without stress. Since rooms may not be ready yet, we drop our bags with Bell Services and head straight to the pool with lunch from Landscape of Flavors. Starting the trip with sunshine, swimming, and a Pina Colada immediately puts everyone in vacation mode.

When we arrive at Disney’s Art of Animation, we already have a separate pool bag packed and ready to go. This makes a HUGE difference because Disney will hold your luggage and deliver it to your room once it’s ready, so you don’t have to drag suitcases around the resort all afternoon.

Official Disney check-in times are:
• 3:00 PM — Standard Disney Resorts
• 4:00 PM — Disney Deluxe Villas

Rooms are often ready earlier, but not always, so being prepared for a wait makes arrival day feel way less stressful.

We LOVE heading straight to the pool while waiting. Usually I grab lunch from Landscape of Flavors and request it “to-go” so we can eat poolside while the kids swim. My husband usually stays with the kids while I grab the food, and honestly? It ends up being one of the easiest and most relaxing meals of the whole trip.

✨ Real Mom Tips:
♡ Pack swimsuits in an easy-access bag
♡ Keep sunscreen in your carry-on
♡ Bring flip flops separate from packed luggage
♡ Pack pool essentials at the hotel before leaving
♡ Don’t over-plan arrival day
♡ Slow starts make the entire trip feel less overwhelming

One thing I’ve learned after multiple Disney trips: the families trying to cram too much into arrival day usually start the vacation exhausted. Starting slow helps everyone recharge after travel and makes the rest of the trip feel so much more enjoyable.

Unpack, Settle in & Recharge

Around 3 PM, I usually head back to the room early while the kids keep swimming or exploring the resort with my husband. Since we stay at Disney’s Art of Animation for about a week, I fully unpack everything to make the rest of the trip feel easier and less chaotic. The suites have a small kitchenette area that works perfectly for organizing snacks, drinks, breakfast items, and all the random little things families end up needing every day. Taking one hour to get organized at the beginning of the trip seriously makes the entire vacation feel less stressful.

One thing I’ve learned from Disney trips: organization matters WAY more than people realize. After long park days, nobody wants to dig through suitcases looking for pajamas, chargers, sunscreen, or tomorrow’s outfits.

While my husband takes our son to the playgrounds and around the resort to explore, I use the quiet time to completely reset the room before the busy park days begin. I unpack everyone’s clothes, organize toiletries, set up snacks and breakfast items, charge devices, and get all our park essentials easy to grab each morning.

The Art of Animation family suites make this especially easy because there’s actually space to spread out. The kitchenette area became our little “home base” for the week and helped keep the room from turning into complete chaos by day three.

✨ Real Mom Tips:
♡ Unpack completely for longer Disney trips
♡ Use packing cubes for each family member
♡ Set up a snack station immediately
♡ Charge portable chargers every night
♡ Lay out park bags before bed
♡ Keep dirty laundry separated from day one
♡ Bring extra grocery bags for organization

One of the most underrated Disney tips? Making your hotel room feel functional and organized. After busy park days, coming back to a clean, unpacked room feels SO much better than walking into suitcase chaos.

First Night Dinner & Early Bed

Once the room is unpacked and everyone is cleaned up from the pool, we use our first night for a fun dinner at one of Disney’s resort restaurants. We love starting the trip with ’Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort because it immediately feels like vacation mode. Since the next day is Magic Kingdom — our longest and most exhausting park day — we always head back early afterward instead of trying to do too much the first night. Starting the trip rested makes SUCH a difference later in the week.

One thing I’ve learned after multiple Disney trips is that the temptation to “maximize every second” on arrival day usually backfires fast. Disney World is a LOT physically, especially in the heat, and Magic Kingdom days can easily turn into 12+ hour marathon days if you stay for fireworks.

That’s why we intentionally keep the first night simple.

We usually schedule one fun dinner reservation, enjoy the atmosphere, then head back early to recharge before the parks officially begin. ’Ohana has become one of our favorite arrival-night traditions because the Polynesian instantly feels relaxing and exciting at the same time.

✨ Real Mom Tips:
♡ Don’t overbook arrival day
♡ Schedule an early dinner if possible
♡ Prioritize sleep before Magic Kingdom
♡ Resort restaurants are less overwhelming than park dining on travel day
♡ Lay out park clothes before bed
♡ Charge ALL devices overnight
♡ Prep park bags before sleeping

One of the best Disney decisions we ever made was realizing not every day needs to be packed full to feel magical. Sometimes the smartest strategy is simply getting rested and ready for the fun ahead.

Recovery Day = Flexibility

After Magic Kingdom, we ALWAYS plan a recovery day. Between the heat, walking, crowds, and fireworks, Magic Kingdom can feel like a marathon — especially with kids. Our recovery days usually include sleeping in, pool time, relaxing, naps, and sometimes Disney Springs at night for dinner. But honestly, some of our favorite Disney memories happened when we stayed flexible and went off-plan a little.

One of the BEST decisions we made was booking a guided catch-and-release bass fishing excursion during one of our recovery days. We originally planned for a slow pool day, but ended up feeling way better than expected and decided to try something different.

It turned into one of the coolest experiences of the trip.

Our guide taught us so much about the wildlife around Disney, and we caught SO many bass during the trip. If you’re going with younger kids, I highly recommend booking the 2-hour option instead of 4 hours. It’s the perfect amount of time before kids start getting overheated or restless — especially during summer.

✨ Things That Helped SO Much:
♡ Book morning fishing times when it’s cooler
♡ Bring snacks and drinks for the kids
♡ The boats have coolers filled with ice
♡ Bring hats and sunscreen
♡ Pack a small towel because it gets HOT
♡ Don’t over-schedule recovery days

One thing Disney doesn’t advertise enough is how many hidden experiences exist outside the parks. Fishing, horseback riding, amphicars, resort hopping, campfires… there’s SO much more than rides.

And honestly? Some of the best moments happen when you slow down enough to discover them.

Disney Springs Days

After Hollywood Studios and EPCOT back-to-back, we usually plan another slower day at Disney Springs. EPCOT alone can be exhausting — especially if you’re attempting to drink around the world — so having a recharge day afterward makes SUCH a difference. We sleep in, grab lunch at Morimoto Asia, shop, explore, and let the day stay flexible instead of overplanned. Some of our favorite Disney memories actually happened on these slower Disney Springs days.

One of the coolest surprises from our trip happened completely by accident while exploring Disney Springs. We discovered the amphibious car rides — vehicles that actually drive on land AND splash into the water like a boat.

Our son got to ride shotgun while we cruised through the lake, and honestly it ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

The captains are incredibly entertaining and share tons of Disney Springs history, hidden details, restaurant stories, and even hidden Mickeys during the ride. It was one of those experiences we never planned for but ended up loving.

After Disney Springs, we usually head back to the resort for more pool time while the kids play and the adults finally relax a little. We normally grab a quick-service dinner back at the resort and call it an early night before the next park day.

✨ Real Mom Tips:
♡ Disney Springs days are PERFECT after EPCOT
♡ Don’t over-schedule every day of your trip
♡ Pool breaks help reset everyone’s moods
♡ Mobile order quick-service dinner for easier evenings
♡ Let kids explore instead of rushing constantly
♡ Some of Disney’s best experiences aren’t inside the parks

One thing I’ve learned after multiple Disney trips: slower days are usually where the best family memories happen.

Save Animal Kingdom for Last

We always save Animal Kingdom for our final park day before flying home. Since the park opens early for Disney resort guests (usually around 7:30 AM) and closes earlier than the other parks, it gives you the full Disney park experience without getting back super late. This makes packing and preparing for travel the next morning SO much easier. Ending the trip this way feels way less stressful than trying to survive a late-night Magic Kingdom day before a flight.

One of the smartest Disney planning decisions we ever made was saving Animal Kingdom for the end of the trip. After several long park days, everyone is usually tired by this point — including the adults — and Animal Kingdom has a much calmer pace compared to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT.

Because the park closes earlier, we still get a full day of rides, snacks, shows, and exploring while making it back to the hotel early enough to:
♡ Pack luggage
♡ Organize airport bags
♡ Charge devices
♡ Shower and relax
♡ Get the kids to bed early before travel day

Animal Kingdom also feels more relaxing visually. Between all the greenery, walking trails, and slower atmosphere, it honestly feels like the perfect “wind down” park before heading home.

✨ Real Mom Tips:
♡ Pack most luggage the night before
♡ Use your final morning for pool time if flights are later
♡ Animal Kingdom is HOT — bring cooling towels and fans
♡ Early entry helps avoid long waits for Flight of Passage
♡ Don’t skip the animal trails — kids LOVE them
♡ Quick-service meals are usually easier on departure days

Disney trips are exhausting in the BEST way possible. Ending with Animal Kingdom helps the trip finish feeling calm instead of chaotic.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Rest days are essential to a Disney trip. Disney is an exciting trip that includes a lot of walking, heat (in the summer), crowds, and making the most memories possible. Scheduling intentional downtime keeps the trip enjoyable for both kids and adults and leaves room for spontaneous experiences you didn’t plan for. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you slow down.

PLAN AHEAD

Pick restaurants before the 60-day window opens and book your entire stay (up to 10 days) at once if you’re saying at a Disney Resort.

STRATEGY = VALUE

Choose the right restaurants, use credits wisely, and you’ll get the most value from your plan.

OUR KEY STRATEGIES

1. The 60-Day Rule

• Reservations open 60 days before your trip at 6:00 AM ET
• Set alarms and be READY before 6 AM
• Disney resort guests can book their entire stay (up to 10 days) at once
• Book the hardest reservations FIRST
• Popular restaurants are usually easier to get toward the end of your trip
• Reservation times can often be modified later
• Most dining reservations can be cancelled up to 2 hours before without penalty

2. Skip Expensive 2-Credit Meals

• Many character meals cost 2 table-service credits per person
• We preferred higher-quality 1-credit restaurants instead
• Lunch is often fewer credits than dinner
• Example: Morimoto Asia lunch = 1 credit, dinner = 2 credits
• Use credits where you’ll get the MOST value
• Character dining can be fun, but it adds up FAST

3. Snack Credit Strategy

• Don’t panic-use snack credits every day
• Save snack credits for EPCOT and specialty treats
• Starbucks drinks are one of the BEST snack credit values
• Favorites: Dole Whip, churros, pretzels, festival foods
• Ordering groceries helped us avoid wasting credits on basic snacks
• Use snack credits on fun or expensive items instead

4. Breakfast Strategy

• We NEVER used dining credits on breakfast
• Grocery delivery saved us SO much money and time
• Breakfast bars, pastries, fruit, and coffee were perfect for early park mornings
• Faster mornings = more rides before crowds build
• Quick breakfasts helped us avoid rushing to reservations
• Save dining credits for lunch and dinner instead

5. Plan For Flexibility

• Dining plans change — leave room to adjust
• Reservation times can usually be modified later
• Most restaurants allow cancellations up to 2 hours before
• Don’t overschedule every meal of your trip
• Some of our favorite meals were spontaneous
• A slower day can completely reset everyone’s mood
• Disney trips are WAY more enjoyable with flexibility built in

Plan ahead. Eat well. Make memories.

The Disney Dining Plan can be a great value, but only if you plan ahead and use your credits strategically.

For us, it simplified budgeting, reduced daily spending stress, and allowed us to enjoy meals without constantly thinking about cost. Disney dining adds up FAST-having a strategy changed everything.

REAL MOM TIP: Don’t spend too much time taking castle photos first thing in the morning..

🚀 TOMORROWLAND

8:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Classic haunted ride filled with ghosts, spirits, and spooky fun.

⭐ Hall of Presidents
Animatronic presidential theater and a great place to cool off in the AC.

🍽️ The Crystal Palace

5:50 PM

Sit-Down Dinner Break

We chose The Crystal Palace for its all-you-can-eat buffet, character dining, and air conditioning. It was the perfect place to rest, recharge, and refuel before heading back to Fantasyland and ending the night with fireworks.

🍽️ FIREWORKS

9:00 PM

Our Firework Strategy

We watch the fireworks closer to the park entrance so it’s less crowded and much easier to leave afterward.

If seeing the castle projections is important to you, grab a snack and claim a spot early because crowds build quickly.

We’d rather beat the rush back to the resort, and honestly, the fireworks are still amazing even from farther back.

FINAL MAGIC KINGDOM TIPS

Arrive Early
Stay Hydrated
Use Mobile Ordering
Take Indoor Breaks
Wear GOOD Shoes

Magic Kingdom is a marathon, not a sprint.

The best days happen when you have a plan but still leave room for snacks, breaks, and random Disney magic.

🍔 ABC COMMISSARY LUNCH

12:00 PM

We eat slightly before the lunch rush and mobile order through the Disney app while waiting in line for a ride. By the time we’re ready to eat, we can walk straight to pickup and avoid wasting time standing in a lunch line.

🎬 HOLLYWOOD BLVD.

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

Lights, Camera, Mickey!

After lunch, we make our way to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The wait can be longer, but much of the queue is indoors, making it a great midday attraction when the Florida heat is at its worst.

A trackless ride inside the Chinese Theater that takes you on a wild adventure with Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy.

❄️ Optional AC Breaks

🤠 TOY STORY LAND

2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

The Hottest Area in the Park

🎆 FANTASMIC!

9:00 PM

We ended the night with Fantasmic!, one of the best nighttime shows at Disney World. With fireworks, water effects, music, and Disney characters, it’s the perfect way to end a Hollywood Studios day. If your family is running low on energy, though, leaving a little early to beat the crowds is never a bad idea.

FINAL HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS TIPS

Arrive Early
Prioritize Thrill Rides
Use Mobile Ordering
Brining Fans
Expect Long Waits

Hollywood Studios feels intense in the best way possible.

By the end of the day you’ll either feel exhausted… or like action heroes. Maybe both!

Why We Start Here

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is our top priority and one of our all-time favorite Disney rides. If Test Track is operating, we head there next, followed by Mission: Space. Getting these major attractions done early allows the rest of the day to be spent eating, exploring, and enjoying World Showcase without stressing about long waits.

Must Do Rides

⭐ Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

⭐ Test Track
An outdoor high-speed attraction where guests design their own virtual vehicle before racing around the track.

Journey Into Imagination with Figment
A fun and quirky ride starring EPCOT’s beloved purple dragon, Figment. It’s a silly attraction filled with imagination, music, and plenty of nostalgic Disney charm.

EPCOT PASSPORT + KIDCOT FUN STOPS

One of the BEST things we did for our son during our EPCOT day.

Kids can visit each Kidcot Fun Stop throughout World Showcase to collect:

You can purchase the official EPCOT World Showcase Passport Kit (about $16.99) at merchandise locations throughout the park, but you do not need one to participate in the activities.

As kids travel through all 11 countries, Cast Members often share fun cultural facts and help them complete their passport pages. It transforms World Showcase from “just walking around” into an interactive world adventure.

🏅 Complete all 11 countries and kids receive an Honorary Ambassador badge!

💗 REAL MOM TIP: This was one of the best things we did all day. It kept our son excited and engaged while we explored, snacked, and enjoyed World Showcase at a much slower pace.

🗺️ World Showcase

LATE MORNING → EVENING

This is what everyone comes for. The secret is not trying to eat everything at once. Share snacks, drink plenty of water between booths, and take your time exploring. We always split food so we can try more dishes without getting stuffed after the first few stops. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.

🇨🇦 CANADA

🍺 Moosehead Lager or Blanche de Chambly

🍿 Maple Popcorn from the entrance stand

🍁 Victoria Gardens

Canada is a great place to begin your trip around World Showcase. The food and drinks are lighter than many of the countries you’ll visit later, making it an easy first stop without filling up too quickly. It’s the perfect way to ease into a full day of eating, drinking, and exploring around the world. While you’re here, take a stroll through Victoria Gardens, one of the prettiest and most peaceful spots in EPCOT.

🇬🇧 UNITED KINGDOM

🍺 Snakebite or Guinness from Rose & Crown

🍟 Fish & Chips from Yorkshire County Fish Shop

🎸 British Rock Garden

The United Kingdom is usually our first substantial food stop of the day. The portions are generous, easy to share, and a great way to recharge before continuing around World Showcase. Don’t miss the beautiful gardens tucked behind the pavilion—they’re one of the most underrated photo spots in EPCOT. If you’re staying for the evening, it’s worth circling back to catch the live music and enjoy the atmosphere as the sun starts to set.

🇫🇷 FRANCE

🍺 Moosehead Lager or Blanche de Chambly

🥪 Les Halles Sandwiches

🍰 Raspberry Macaron or Crème Brûlée

🐭 Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Ride

France is usually where we stop for lunch and take a break from the Florida heat. The sandwiches are delicious, the desserts are hard to resist, and it’s one of the best places in EPCOT to slow down for a bit. We typically share a sandwich so we still have room for all the snacks and drinks waiting around World Showcase. After lunch, we head over to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, which is conveniently located nearby and makes for a perfect post-meal ride before continuing our trip around the world.

🇲🇦 MOROCCO

🍺 Casa Beer

🥙 Chicken/Lamb Keba

🧆 Hummus with Pita Chips

🖌️ Get a Henna Tattoo

Morocco is a great change of pace after all the pastries and sweet treats in France. The chicken and lamb kebab are packed with flavor, the hummus is perfect for sharing, and everything feels satisfying without being too heavy. While you’re here, take a few minutes to wander the winding streets and detailed architecture—it’s one of the most immersive and overlooked pavilions in all of World Showcase. If you’ve ever wanted a souvenir that lasts longer than a snack, this is also a great place to get a traditional henna tattoo.

🇺🇸 AMERICAN ADVENTURE

🍺 Samuel Adams

🍋 Tennessee Lemonade

🍖 BBQ Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese

🇺🇸 The American Adventure Show

By the time we reach America, everyone is usually ready for a real meal. We grab a Samuel Adams Seasonal Brew or Tennessee Lemonade and share the BBQ Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese from Regal Eagle Smokehouse. It’s filling, familiar, and a crowd-pleaser for both adventurous eaters and picky kids. If you need a break, The American Adventure is a comfortable, air-conditioned show, but it’s an easy skip if you’re short on time.

🇮🇹 ITALY

🍷 Italian Sangria

🍺 Moretti

🍕 Pizza Slice

🍨 Hand-Scooped Gelato

⛲ Italian Piazza

By the time we reach Italy, a little extra fuel goes a long way. We usually grab a Moretti or Italian Sangria and share a giant pizza slice from the Via Napoli window. The slices are huge, making them perfect for sharing and leaving room for dessert. If it’s a hot day, Gelateria Toscana is the perfect next stop for a creamy gelato or refreshing sorbet before continuing around World Showcase.

🇩🇪 GERMANY

🍺 Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen

🥃 Mozart Chocolate Cream Shot

🍿 Werther’s Caramel Popcorn and Werther’s Butter Bar

🏘️ Miniature Village

Germany is one of those stops where a quick snack can easily turn into a longer break. We usually grab a Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen, share some Werther’s Caramel Popcorn, and pick up a Butter Bar, which ended up being our favorite sweet treat in EPCOT. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Mozart Chocolate Cream Liqueur shot from Weinkeller is surprisingly smooth and absolutely worth trying, even for people who don’t normally enjoy shots.

🇯🇵 JAPAN

🍺 Asahi

🍶 Sake

🍣 Teppan Edo (Sushi and Hibachi)

⛩️ Torii Gate Photos

Japan is where we slow down and enjoy a proper dinner. We usually book Teppan Edo for the hibachi experience, which is entertaining for kids and adults alike, and some of the best food you’ll eat all day. If you enjoy sushi, this is also a great opportunity to order sushi or sashimi. If you’re using the Disney Dining Plan, consider ordering one of the specialty cocktails since they are often included with your meal (always double-check first). After dinner, we grab an Asahi or sake and continue exploring the pavilion with the Torii Gates and Koi ponds.

🇨🇳 CHINA

🍺 Tsingtao

🍹 Canto Loopy Cocktail

🥟 Chicken Pot Stickers

🥠 Pork Egg Rolls

🎥 Reflections of China

China is a great quick stop when you want something tasty without slowing down your day. We usually grab a Tsingtao or Canto Loopy Cocktail along with an order of Pork Egg Rolls or Chicken Pot Stickers to share while exploring the pavilion. If you need a break from the heat, Reflections of China is a 12-minute Circle-Vision film that takes you through both ancient and modern China. It’s a great air-conditioned stop if you have the time and need to recharge before continuing around World Showcase.

🇳🇴 NORWAY

☕ Frozen Viking Coffee (Coffee + Baileys + Kamora)

🍺 Kornøl Farmhouse Ale

🍺 Juniper Pilsner

🍞 School Bread (custard-filled sweet bun topped with coconut)

❄️ Frozen Ever After Ride

Norway is usually where we satisfy our sweet tooth and tackle one of EPCOT’s most popular rides. We often grab a Frozen Viking Coffee for a much-needed afternoon boost, along with a School Bread to share before getting in line for Frozen Ever After. The ride takes you on a boat journey through Arendelle with your favorite Frozen characters and even includes a small backwards drop. If you’re a big Frozen fan, you can also meet Anna and Elsa at the Royal Sommerhus nearby. Just be prepared for long waits, as both the ride and character meet-and-greet are some of the most popular attractions in World Showcase.

🇲🇽 MEXICO

🥃 La Cava Avenger (secret menu tequila shot)

🥭 Mango Margarita

🌮 Elote or Tacos

🚤 Gran Fiesta Tour Boat Ride

Mexico is usually our final stop around World Showcase and one of the liveliest pavilions by the evening. We start with a frozen Mango Margarita from Choza de Margarita and share an order of Elote or Tacos while listening to the lively mariachi band perform outside. Then we head inside the pyramid to explore, ride the Gran Fiesta Tour, and enjoy a break in the air conditioning. If you’re a tequila fan, don’t leave without trying the La Cava Avenger, a secret-menu drink from La Cava del Tequila.

🍃 World Nature

AFTER THE WORLD SHOWCASE

Why We End Here

Once your feet start dying, these rides are PERFECT. After you’ve made it all the way around World Showcase, this is the ideal place to slow down, cool off, and rest your feet before fireworks. The attractions here are relaxing, air-conditioned, and require very little walking.

🐾 This is at your own pace and keeps the day exciting as you explore.

Like always, we grabbed coffee at Creature Comforts Starbucks right inside the park, then immediately headed for the safari.

The most important Animal Kingdom tips:

Go to Kilimanjaro Safaris early.

Morning is when the animals are most active, the temperatures are cooler, and the experience feels more like a real safari.

🦁 AFRICA - SAFARI TOUR

8:00 AM – 8:30 AM

Why We Start Here

The entire day revolves around the Safari Tour. Animals are most active first thing in the morning, and you’ll see far more wildlife now than later in the day.

Must Do Rides

Kilimanjaro Safaris
A real African-style safari adventure where you’ll travel through open savannas and spot giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, rhinos, and more. Animals are most active in the morning, making this one of the best first rides of the day at Animal Kingdom.

💙 PANDORA- THE WORLD OF AVATAR

8:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Most Popular Area

Head here immediately after the safari, or even first thing if Flight of Passage is your top priority. Pandora becomes one of the busiest areas in the park later in the day, so tackling it early can save you hours of waiting.

Must Do Rides

If you didn’t ride earlier, now is your chance. If you did ride earlier, consider riding again because every safari is different and the animals are constantly moving.

🍴 Lunch at Tusker House (12:20 PM)

One of the best character dining experiences in Animal Kingdom, featuring a delicious buffet with African-inspired flavors and appearances from Mickey and friends in their safari outfits. 🏔️ ASIA

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

The Perfect Kid Energy Burner

By this point in the day, kids usually have one last burst of energy before heading back to the hotel. Dinoland U.S.A. is a great place to let them climb, explore, and squeeze in a few more attractions before Animal Kingdom closes.
